I would never recommend any of these telescopes. They are very low quality with little consequence. You would wasting your money on more expensive optical distortions that create nothing but frustration of his friend. I'd recommend that instead of a scope, you buy a membership to your local astronomical society or astronomy club for his friend. Your friend will get much more for membership than never would if you bought a poor excuse for a telescope. End also spending less money for the membership as well. You friend may attend their monthly meetings, which often include large guest speakers. Most clubs have provided the areas that are free for members. You can go to parties star of the club and try first hand all the different types of quality telescopes out there that will allow your friend to make the right choice of a telescope for purchase. It will also make many new friends really well. Yes, a club member will bring much more enjoyment to your friend than a scope I could never cheap. There are different types of telescopes and they all have some excellent features. Refractors and reflectors, in addition to Schmidt Cassegrain, Refractors APO, Mac-Cass, and many more. There are also several mounts and mounts to choose are as important, if not even more important that the scope is. All the different areas and mounts have some features that some people like and dislike. No two eyes are alike and the perfect environment for one person may be completely wrong for another person. Go-To scopes type can be frustrating. If you have not lined up exactly perfect, they find the targets. If you are a beginner, you will be frustrated unless you spring for a GPS Go-To. A locator object is just that — will locate objects for you (should be in line first), but a locator object is not an engine monitoring system. It will not keep the field the target application. The Orion site has some excellent diagrams and explanations of all kinds of areas and media. Things to consider are size – can the user to lift and transport the scope in the Display page easily? Not a bad idea, but do not buy anything less than 10×50 and must also have a tripod or you do not be happy with your astronomical views because it will be too shakey from your movements. Personally, I prefer a scope to binoculars because Binos if not aligned correctly at the factory, then you get ghosting and distortions that can not be fixed. Most cheap binoculars are not properly aligned. That's not so important for terrestrial viewing, but is a murderer for astronomical viewing. Binos can also be beaten out of alignment and become them useless for astronomy. When you buy go Orion and you wont be disappointed. Do not try to learn everything at once or you will be overwhelmed and discouraged. Patience is the key Astronomy. Need a good star program successes as well.
